Fly in from Delhi or Bangalore, spend a day exploring Guwahati’s temples and ghats, then drive 220 km into the wild for rhino safaris, elephant rides, and Assam home food. Budget estimates, kaziranga resort picks, and honest tips — all here. 2026 updated.

No one warned me that Assam would feel like a warm hug from a stranger. But here we are.

It started with a Delhi to Guwahati flight booked on a whim — late night, half-asleep, credit card in hand. My partner and I had been talking about Northeast India for two years. We finally just went. And yaara, that trip changed something.

This is not a copy-paste itinerary with bullet points and no soul. This is what we actually did — where we stayed, what we ate, when we got lost, and the exact moment we saw a one-horned rhino from 12 feet away and both forgot to breathe.

If you’re searching for the best places to visit in Guwahati and want to add Kaziranga to the mix — read this first. Yeh sach mein helpful hoga.

Where Does This Trip Begin? | Getting There + First Impressions

Most people fly. The Delhi to Guwahati flight is about 2.5 hours — affordable and easy, bookable under Rs. 5,000 if you plan ahead. Coming from the south? The Bangalore to Guwahati flight takes 3 to 3.5 hours. For budget travelers and train lovers, the Delhi to Guwahati train is a brilliant option — the Northeast Express or Brahmaputra Mail — an overnight journey that wakes you up right in the heart of Assam.

Guwahati airport is 20 km from the city. Cab takes about 40 minutes. The moment you step outside — the air is warmer, greener, and something in it says: slow down, yaar.

Day 1 — Guwahati: What Are the Best Places to Visit Here?

We landed by noon. Dropped bags at a guesthouse near Paltan Bazaar — one of the better areas for hotels in Guwahati. Walkable, close to the river, and within 15 minutes of most things you want to see.

Guwahati surprises you. Most people treat it as just a transit stop before Kaziranga. That is a mistake. The guwahati places to visit list is quietly brilliant — Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hill, the Umananda Temple sitting on a Brahmaputra island, Fancy Bazaar’s evening food madness, and the riverfront at golden hour when the Brahmaputra turns orange and the whole city slows down.

Hum ferry se Umananda gaye, chai pi, wapas aaye — aur decide kar liya ki ek din aur rehna chahiye tha.

Top Places to Visit in Guwahati | Day 1 Circuit

  • Kamakhya Temple — one of India’s most powerful Shakti peethas, morning visit recommended
  • Umananda Temple — river island Shiva temple, ferry ride (Rs. 100 pp)
  • Brahmaputra Riverfront — free, golden hour is unmissable
  • Fancy Bazaar — Guwahati’s oldest market zone, best street food evenings
  • Assam State Museum — 2-hour stop, good context before the wildlife days

Day 2 — The Road to Kaziranga | And Why the Drive Matters

Morning chai. Then cab. The guwahati to kaziranga distance is about 220 km, roughly 4 to 5 hours on NH 27. It sounds long, doesn’t feel it. Mustard fields, tea estates, roadside pineapple stalls, small towns where life moves at its own pace. We stopped three times for no reason. That’s just Assam.

We reached our kaziranga resort by lunch — a mid-range property near the Central Range gate at Kohora. Clean, quiet, jungle sounds at night. The staff helped us book the evening safari on the spot. And that evening — barely 10 minutes into the Central Range — our guide raised his hand. Stop. A one-horned rhino, 12 feet from the jeep. Just grazing. Majestic in that completely unbothered way.

Both of us forgot to click photos for the first 30 seconds. We just watched. No filter can touch that moment.

Central Range (Kohora):  Best for one-horned rhinos — highest density in the park. Western Range (Bagori):  Wildlife variety, birds, hog deer — less crowded. Eastern Range (Agaratoli):  Raw, quiet — best for experienced wildlife watchers. Safari Timings:  Morning 5:30–8:30 AM | Afternoon 2:00–5:30 PMKaziranga National Park Hotels:  Book forest-adjacent properties near Kohora for easy early startsKaziranga National Park Images:  Tip — morning safari light (6–7 AM) gives the best photography conditions

Day 3 — Safari Morning, Elephant Ride, Local Assamese Lunch

4:30 AM. Birds handling the alarm. We were in the Western Range jeep by 5:30. The jungle at dawn is something that no kaziranga national park images online can really prepare you for — the fog, the grass taller than the jeep, the sounds, and then a herd of wild buffalo crossing your path single file like they own the road. They do.

After breakfast, we booked an elephant safari at the park office — gets you into tall grass areas no jeep can enter. Slightly terrifying, completely incredible.

Lunch at a dhaba outside the park: rice, dal, aloo pitika (mashed potatoes with mustard oil), rohu fish curry. Plates were piled high. Bilkul no regrets.

Day 4 — Back to Guwahati, Last Temple, Flight Home

Last day. Slow drive back. One more glass of strong Assam tea from a roadside stall near Nagaon. Reached Guwahati by afternoon, finally did a proper Kamakhya Temple visit, then headed to the airport for the Guwahati to Delhi flight at night.

Window seat. Guwahati glowing below. We were already planning the next trip.

Which are the must-see places to visit in Guwahati before heading to Kaziranga?

You can combine the drive with an evening safari on the same day — Day 2 of this itinerary does exactly that. Start from Guwahati by 8 AM.

What are the best hotels in Kaziranga and resorts near the park?

For hotels in kaziranga, staying near Kohora village (Central Range gate) is ideal. Good kaziranga national park hotels include Iora The Retreat, Infinity Resort, and Wild Grass Lodge.
